Designers v. Planners

When a newly engaged couple begins to plan their wedding and looks for help in doing so, what many of them don’t know is that there is a difference between an event designer and an event planner. Yes, your designer can likely help you with some planning aspects like vendor recommendations and likewise, your planner can probably help you with some aspects of design. However, a designers job is not to plan and a planners job is not to design. Here is the breakdown so that you know what you are shopping for.

An event designer specializes in event decor, rentals, developing your theme, and making it all come together for a cohesive look. Event planners manage the logistics of your event, make sure the vendors show up on time, help you find vendors (like a designer should you need one), troubleshoot and ensure that the flow of the event is seemless. It is not unheard of to hire both a planner and a designer. As I mentioned, there are companies that can and do do both well. Just be aware of what kind of vendor you are hiring and what exactly it is you want/need from them so that you know you are getting the services you require.

Tipping Your Vendors

Last week alone  I had three questions about tipping the vendors at one’s wedding. This is a common question from brides and grooms and something often forgotten when budgeting for your wedding. Suddenly when it is the week of the wedding couples begin to panic thinking they need to shell out several thousand additional dollars they didn’t plan on. Here are my tips on who you need to tip and how much and who you don’t need to tip. Also, if possible, delegate this task, you are not going to remember those envelopes of cash in your jacket on your wedding day. Give your planner, dad, best man the tips and final payments and ask them to distribute them so you do not need to remember!

Note: please don’t get mad at me vendors if I say they don’t need to tip you. ;) Of course a tip for wonderful service from anyone is always appreciated and a perfect way to say thank you for a job well done!

Planner: Not necessary. About half of my clients tip anyway, which is a nice thing to do for any vendor who goes above and beyond. Anywhere from $100 – $300 is standard or often times clients send a gift card or some other nice gift, which is also very appropriate.

Photographer/Videographer: Not necessary. I would say I’m given a tip for the photographer maybe 1/4 of the time, generally anywhere from $50-$150.

DJ or Musicians: Necessary. Tip a DJ about $50. If you have a string quartet or band, tip about $20-$25/musician or band member.

Officiant: Not necessary. One is generally asked to make a donation to the church/synagogue or wherever your religious ceremony might be held. However, it is polite to invite your officiant to stay for dinner or at least cocktails.

Hair and Makeup: Necessary. Tip exactly like you do if you were getting your hair done at the salon (unless you don’t tip at the salon, opps!), 15-20%.

Florist: Not necessary

Transportation: Necessary. 15% is standard

Reception wait staff: Necessary. 15-20% of the total food and beverage. Do not include rentals, labor or tax, only tip on the food and beverage total. Give the full amount the the captain and ask him or her to distribute to his staff.

Caterers: Not necessary, unless it is the catering staff doing the serving, in which case see above. Usually the caterers will provide your set up, so it would be a nice gesture to tip the set up staff. $10-$15 per person.

Cake baker: No necessary.

NOTE: Always check all of your contracts to see if gratuity/service fee is being charged (it is often times). If so, then you do not need to tip on top of that, unless you would like to thank them for an exceptional job.

Try to think about tipping during your planning and budgeting process so that you aren’t caught off guard at the last minute. And please remember, while it may not be necessary to tip some vendors, it is always appreciated when you feel they have made your day especially spectacular.

Vendor Spotlight – JGB Interiors

Don’t we all wish we could have someone come into our homes or offices and tell us how to best arrange our furniture or what colors to use in our space? Jessica at JGB Interiors is that person! JGB Interiors specializes in residential design consultations. Jessica has a masters in interior design from the Corcoran College of Art and Design here in DC where she is also an adjunct faculty member. Besides residential design consultations, JGB Interiors also offers interior color consultations, interior re-designs, remote design consultations and hourly consultation. Jessica has an amazing eye for design, she is so talented!

Jessica tells me “I absolutely LOVE doing color consultations (meaning prescribe paint colors for someone’s home).  Typically this is a one-time-service, where I spend about 90 minutes at someone’s home walking through and doing a preliminary palette; then I think about it for a few days and do some more research, make final swatch selections, send them in the mail, and ask them to test a few per room. They make their choices based on the light/shade/preference…(I’ll come back if they’re struggling) and that’s it — they paint!  It’s so gratifying and immediate, and incidentally my last 4 or 5 have been mostly engaged couples that have just bought homes.”

Vendor Spotlight – LilyPad Weddings

Your invitation or save the date is the first glimpse that your guests are going to get of your wedding. Stationary gives them the first hint of if your wedding is going to be quirky or formal, the color scheme. Your stationary suite isn’t just about delivering the necessary information, it will be your guests window into your wedding and what it will be like. Which is why I love it! You can do so much with your stationary suite and you have so much to choose from. My favorite stationer is LilyPad Weddings, a boutique graphic design studio founded by two sisters (how fun is that?! I want to work with my sister!) and their love for paper, design and weddings.

LilyPad offers several designs which can be customized and new custom designs are always available as well. My favorite is the Georgetown!  Their services go above and beyond invitations to the entire wedding weekend making sure every aspect is customized to your theme. Their services include all enclosures, cocktail napkins, monograms or logos, menus, programs, table numbers, out of town bags, escort cards, favor boxes and more. Kristin Regen, President says that she “loves that many couples are now taking that initial concept and carrying it through all of their day-of wedding stationery, making their paper goods a key part of their ceremony and reception decor. It’s especially fun for us to get to design a complete collection where the pieces are all inspired by the same concept, but differ slightly in some way. Vendor Spotlight – Danielle Cover Photography

There are many talented photographers in the DC area and I’ve been so lucky to work with many of them-Danielle Cover is by far my favorite. She is a self taught photographer out of Baltimore who learned at the hand of another one-time local photographer. Danielle photographs families, weddings, engagements, and other celebrations.

I love to work with Danielle as a vendor because I know she is going to make me look good, I know she is going to make my clients comfortable, I know they are going to be thrilled with their photos and everything is going to be easy!  When asked, Danielle tells me “my favorite things to photograph are creative portraits of people ~ i love that moment when someone gives the feedback that i’ve captured the true personality of a person, or that they feel like they know a stranger when they see my photos.  i also really love details ~ they just make me happy.”

Wish Upon a Wedding

Wish Upon a Wedding is the world’s first non-profit wish granting organization providing weddings and vow renewals for couples facing terminal illnesses and serious life altering circumstances, regardless of sexual orientation. The organization was launched in January, 2010 in San Francisco, today there are 13 locations across the country and 11 additional chapters launching in 2011. The idea behind Wish Upon a Wedding is that often, couples facing such situations do not have the energy, time, money, or resources needed to plan their wedding. Our organization takes care of all the details, offering couples a chance to relax and enjoy a very special day while surrounded by the love of their closest family and friends.

How it works is that vendors of every type in the wedding industry and beyond donate their services in order to make a couple’s wedding wish a reality. The couples are not given money in order to plan their wedding. All of the resources they could need are donated, from a planner to pull it all together to rings, catering, attire and florals. If you are a vendor interested in donating your services to Wish Upon a Wedding you can apply to become a wish granter here. We could not grant these wishes without the generosity of professionals from the wedding and hospitality industry. The Washington, DC Chapter launched in June of 2010 and has granted two wishes thus far. The DC Chapter serves DC, MD, VA and WV. There are other ways you can give to Wish Upon a Wedding, even if you are not in the wedding industry. You can make a donation, donate airline miles, donate to Wish Upon a Wedding in lieu of favors or gifts at your wedding, or donate 1% of your profits to Wish Upon a Wedding.  We are are thankful for any way in which you choose to give of yourself to this worthy cause.

Vendor Spotlight – The Seasoned Table

Anyone who pays any attention to my Facebook posts or Twitter feed has figured out that in general, food is not my friend, unless it is candy or carb (mostly candy)! That all changes when Sarah from The Seasoned Table feeds me.  The Seasoned Table is a personal chef service in the Washington, DC area. From designing a customized menu to grocery shopping and meal preparation, The Seasoned Table offers complete, affordable services to make your meals delicious, hassle-free and nutritious.  Their services include home meal replacement, organic baby food, home cooking classes, private dinners for two, box lunches and much more.

While Sarah has a natural talent and passion for cooking and food, she is trained at the Art Institute of Washington, where she was classically trained. Personally, as someone who has been enjoying Sarah’s cooking for years, I find that one of her best talents in life and in the kitchen is her ability to ask the right questions and pay attention, therefore noticing what one really likes and doesn’t. With just a few little details that she gleans from a conversation, Sarah is able to create a meal you will love.  Of course this is not her work model, she has an in-depth questionnaire of your likes and dislikes, it is just a talent I find refreshing. And as someone who doesn’t generally enjoy food, it is something that constantly amazes me, her ability to make me a meal that I didn’t even know I would like, but Sarah did, and she’s always right, I always love it!  Sarah is a member of the United States Personal Chef Association. She is ServSafe certified and fully insured.

Sarah has shared a recipe with us that you can make at home in preparation for your Super Bowl parties coming up next weekend! This is a healthier take on a traditional Super Bowl Sunday favorite.  It’s a twist on loaded potato skins with fewer fat and calories, lots more nutrients and just as much delicious flavor as the original.  This is a great recipe for entertaining because it can be made a day ahead finished in the oven just before your guests arrive.  It’s also a terrific way to slip wholesome, nutritious ingredients into a kid friendly food.  It’s a basic recipe that can be tweaked to fit all kinds of occasions.  Add some crab and a dash of Old Bay for a summer appetizer or crumbled Italian sausage and Parmesan as a tasty side dish.

Broccoli cheddar stuffed potato skins with ranch style sauce

Potato skins

  • 8 large new potatoes
  • 9 ounce package frozen broccoli
  • 1 medium garlic clove, minced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup skim milk
  • 2 ounces cheddar cheese, grated
  • olive oil cooking spray

Sauce

  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Italian parsley, minced
  • 1 medium garlic clove, minced

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.

Pierce potatoes several times with a fork and cover in damp paper towels. Microwave on high for 13 to 15 minutes, until potatoes are cooked through. Remove from microwave and cool until potatoes are easy to handle. Slice potatoes in half lengthwise. Using a spoon, scoop all but 1/8 inch of the inside of the potato, leaving skin intact.

Spray the inside and outside of potatoes with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Place potatoes, skin-side down, on a baking sheet and bake until skins are crisp and edges are golden brown, about 20 minutes.

In the meantime, prepare the filling. Defrost the broccoli in the microwave, drain and chop.  In a large bowl, combine the potatoes, broccoli, one clove of minced garlic, butter, milk, cheddar, salt and pepper.  Using a potato masher, combine thoroughly.

To make the ranch topping, combine nonfat yogurt, chopped onions, Italian parsley, remaining minced garlic and salt and pepper to taste.

Divide the filling evenly among potatoes. Lower oven to 400 degrees F and return potatoes to oven until cheese is melted, about 5 minutes. Spoon 1 tablespoon of the ranch sauce on top of the stuffed potatoes.
