To Have or Not to Have: Signature Cocktails

I often have clients consider the possibility of beer and wine only for their events and then the addition of a signature cocktail. Here is my two cents about a signature cocktail and then a few that sound amazing should you decide to take that route…

Don’t get me wrong, I adore a signature cocktail – they are fun, they look pretty and they can tie a theme together beautifully – but I happen to be a cocktail drinker in general, which many of your wedding guests will not be. That is to say, when one offers a signature cocktail it brings a fun element to the wedding that everyone wants to take part in. Therefore, everyone and I mean everyone, is going to try your signature cocktail – because they can, because it is free! So your aunt who knows she is not particularly fond of the liquor in which your cocktail is made, is still going to try one. She, like so many others, is going to take one drink and put it down and get what they really wanted in the first place.  This is going to drive your bar tab way way up. This means you have to account for at least one extra drink per person when you offer a signature cocktail.

Now if you have an unlimited budget, go for it! Or, if you are already offering a full bar, everything in your cocktail is part of the bar and you are paying a set price for a bar package, then again, go for it! But if you think you are going to save money by offering beer and wine and a signature cocktail, you might be mistaken. If you feel the need to add something to your beer and wine only bar, add champagne. People are not going to grab a glass of champagne just to try it, we all know what champagne tastes like and if we enjoy it or not.

This all leads to my two cents about full bar vs. beer and wine only…people will be happy with what you offer them. It is free, they will drink it and be happy. Now of course, people like liquor, if you offer it, they are going to be thrilled. But if you don’t, they will drink the beer or wine. So don’t feel the pressure to add the signature cocktail for your liquor drinking friends or to spruce up your bar. It is all free alcohol and your guests will be happy to have it, regardless of what it is (well assuming you are offering options most people will enjoy – not just a sweet wine and a wheat beer). I by no means want to imply you should not take excellent care of your guests who have come to celebrate you. Only that your guests want to see you happy and married and in love and have a good time and that they will be happy to celebrate you with a glass of wine or cocktail, either way.

Now, should you decide to offer a signature cocktail, I think these sound and look amazing!

Engagement Session: Shifali & Scott

Shifali is a medical student living out of state, therefore her groom is doing much of the planning locally with input from Shifali when she has a free moment. I love to see a groom so involved. I can’t wait for their American/Indian wedding this fall, it is going to be beautiful. And I adore this U Street photoshoot from Danielle Cover Photography!

Winter Weddings

Weddings are not plentiful this time of year, but there are the few brave souls who brave the cold and opt for a winter wedding. Those that do, can be rewarded with a beautiful white wedding (after all of your guests have arrived of course). I know the snow can be a cause for concern on your wedding day, but take a look at what you could get if you had a little snow! You could even use the snow as your inspiration, instead of worrying about it, work with it.
